Following the passage of Ballast Water management legislation in California late in 1999, it was
Clear that Washington state would follow suit and introduce similar legislation. This proved to be True and PSSOA was instrumental in guiding the legislation development. There is currently is a Bill which has passed both houses of the legislature and awaits signing by the governor to become law.Following passage into law, expect the following schedule:
July 1, 2000 – Law becomes effective, and BW reports must be provided to
state,
July 1, 2001 – Standards for BW tank sampling become effective,
July 1, 2002 – Unexchanged BW must be treated prior to discharge in WA waters.
